A natural fire, in four simple steps.
No lighter fluid. No chemicals. Just birch bark, a flame and a few seconds of patience.
Light your fire in four steps
Whether it's your wood stove, a fire pit or the BBQ, the method is always the same.
-
Step 01Step 1: Prepare
Prepare your wood
Start with dry firewood or charcoal. Set out a handful of thin kindling and a few larger logs, so everything is within reach once the flame catches.
TipDry wood makes all the difference.
-
Step 02Step 2: Place
Place two pieces of bark
Tuck two pieces of FYR birch bark between the wood or charcoal, low down where air can reach them. Lay the kindling loosely on top.
TipLeave small gaps. Fire needs air.
-
Step 03Step 3: Light
Light a third piece
Light the edge of a third piece with a match or lighter. Thanks to its natural oils, birch bark catches almost instantly. Hold it against the other two.
TipA thin edge catches fastest.
-
Step 04Step 4: Enjoy
Build it up and enjoy
Once the kindling burns steadily, add larger logs one at a time. Then sit back and enjoy a clean, natural fire.
TipAdd wood gradually, don't smother the flame.
How much do you need?
In our experience, one or two pieces are usually more than enough to get the fire going.
Use three when you want a quicker start, or when conditions ask for a little extra.
From spark to fire in seconds
Watch how a single piece of birch bark catches instantly and builds into a steady fire. No lighter fluid, no shortcuts.
Tips for every fire
A few small tricks for the places you'll use FYR most.
Wood stove & fireplace
Place the bark on the grate beneath your kindling and open the air vent fully before lighting. Close the vent gradually once the logs are burning well.
A natural scent, no chemical smell indoors.
Fire pit & campfire
Build a small teepee of kindling around the bark. Light it on the side the wind is coming from, so the breeze carries the flame into the wood.
Reliable, even when the wood is a little damp.
BBQ & outdoor cooking
Tuck two pieces into a small pile of charcoal, or place them under a chimney starter. Start cooking once the coals are covered in grey ash.
Nothing added, so nothing in your food.
Wet or windy weather
Birch bark's natural oils let it burn when damp. Shield the flame from the wind with your hand or a log, and add a third piece if needed.
Keep a few pieces in a dry pocket.
Safe use & storage

- Close the box after use, so the bark stays ready for next time.
- Kept dry, birch bark does not expire.
Questions about using FYR
How many pieces do I need?
One or two pieces often do the job. Use three when you want a quicker start, or when the wood is damp or the weather is windy.
Does it work when it's wet?
Yes. Birch bark contains natural oils that let it burn even in damp or rainy conditions. For the best result, keep the box itself dry.
How long does one piece burn?
Each piece burns long enough to reliably catch kindling and small wood, typically several minutes of strong, steady flame.
Can I use FYR indoors?
Yes, in a fireplace or wood stove. Because it's 100% natural birch bark, there's no chemical smell in your home.
Is it safe for BBQ and cooking?
Yes. FYR is pure birch bark with no additives, so it's safe for cooking fires and BBQs.
How should I store it?
In a dry place, away from heat sources. Kept dry, birch bark keeps working indefinitely.
Live simple. Stay wild. Keep the fire.
